It seems like everyone is on some kind of diet nowadays. As for me and my house, we have decided that we still want to treat ourselves now and then. By vote, the favorite cookie around here is my White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookie. The funny part? Do you know that big-chain sandwich restaurant that has these cookies? Yeah… my family would rather have mine any day. *wink*
I will be the first to admit that I was not genetically engineered with a hugely active sweet tooth. My preference for snack foods leans heavily toward salty or savory. But I have kids and a lot of company that just adore a cookie or two with coffee or tea.
White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies for Company
I don’t know when we got out of the habit, but I distinctly remember when my grandmothers both had specific desserts laying around with the specific intent of getting it out when company came. But then again, those were the days when someone knocked we didn’t crawl around on the floor hiding from people.
Please tell me I’m not the only one who crawls around like a soldier behind enemy lines when someone pulls into the driveway in a vehicle that I don’t recognize.
I am definitely trying to get better about this. I also am thinking about trying to be more social and having a dinner party once in a while. But intentions are always prettier than reality.
Bringing back Grandma’s Cookie Jar
I’m not going to lie. I miss those days of having cookies shoved into your hands as you were getting all bundled up to leave Grandma’s house.
Grandma always had a cookie jar right by the back door of her house. As you walked past the kitchen table and the cellar door, that antique bookcase sat there with cookbooks, artwork by my aunt and my cousin, and that shining, glorious cookie jar.
I cannot tell you if I can honestly remember even once that my sister and I walked by that jar to leave Grandma’s house we didn’t get told to “make sure you grab some cookies” on our way out. Today’s society acts as if that generation just “doesn’t understand” food allergies or diets. I completely and totally disagree. My Grandpa was diabetic, so he couldn’t eat the cookies that she stashed in that magical jar. She “got” it, but back in those days, I truly believe that feeding someone was loving them. It was making sure that they were sustained. They were full. They were happy.
Think about it… the 3 basic necessities of a human being are food, shelter, and water. They had the home and the roof above our heads. Water came from the well. Or in times that the power was out, there was emergency water or the creek. Food is on that list too. If they are making sure that they are SHOWING their love for us, wouldn’t it stand to reason that FEEDING us was their way of showing love?

I’m not telling you to bring back Grandma’s cookie jar. You can, and I think that would be amazing if we all did it. (PS. If you do, share it with me in the comments.) But you can bake a batch of these White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies any time you want.

White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies
Ingredients
- ¾ cup butter softened
- ¼ cup shortening
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ¾ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 ½ cups flour
- 2 cups white baking pieces
- 1 ½ cup macadamia nuts chopped
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375F.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and shortening with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds.
- Add the brown sugar, granulated sugar, baking soda and salt. Beat until the mixture is combined, scraping the sides of the bowl often. Beat in eggs and vanilla until combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in the remaining flour by hand.
- Stir in the chocolate pieces and nuts.
- Drop dough by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 8-9 minutes or until the edges are light brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
