Easy Crockpot Green Beans and Ham- Come Home To Dinner!
Just like Grandma used to make, we love the frugality and simplicity of this Crockpot Green Beans and Ham in our home. Make a batch today, served with some homemade bread for an easy, filling meal.
Thinking back, I never realized that half of the comfort foods that were served in my family’s homes weren’t just because they are delicious. It was because without me even realizing it, they taught me how to be frugal in our food choices.
Good Eating
Apparently, my dear husband grew up with the same mentality. Both of our familys have blessed us with the backyard garden being normal to us. Being able to grow a lot of our own vegetables allows us to spend our normal grocery budget during the summer filling our meat freezer.
I can and preserve a lot of our homegrown produce also, as I will walk you through during future posts on this blog. But there is nothing like a pot of these during the warm summer months when I can essentially just walk out to the garden to grocery shop.
Green Beans and Ham
While the recipe (and when I talk about it) is called Crockpot Green Beans and Ham, don’t be fooled. There is more in the pot to flavor and fill your palette.
I typically also throw in at least one onion, about 6-8 potatoes, salt, pepper, and the occasional garlic clove or two. (Typically this is when I’m harvesting it, or have excess to use up.)
One bowl always fills me up. Because of the amount that comes from this recipe, I can’t tell you a time that this hasn’t fed us for more than one night. My Crockpot Green Beans and Ham is a staple in our meal planning.
Zero Complaints. Ever.
I have never in my entire life made Crockpot Green Beans and Ham that my husband has complained. Even if I didn’t have any potatoes to throw in, or I left out the garlic. Heck, one time I didn’t even have any true cubed ham to use. So I just threw in a leftover ham bone from the freezer. He still loves it. I throw in bacon too if I have it.
There is just something comforting and filling about good old-fashioned country food that makes us happy.
Slow Cooker Cooking
I think everyone should own a Crockpot. I have amassed quite of a collection of them myself. Having the means to come home to a home cooked meal is priceless. It saves so many unneccessary stops to get takeout. (And if you have been around before, you know I despise fast food.)
They have so many options in slow cookers. If you don’t have one, just get yourself one. Buy a cheap one to start. Having one will make a world of difference in your home. In the hot summer months, it doesn’t heat up your kitchen. In the winter, you can slow cook a hearty bowl of soup to warm you up.
