Calming the Chaos

Ever notice how our homes have gotten larger over the years, yet we have less time to keep up with them? I myself have almost 4000 square feet of house to keep up with and yet I work a lot. Between my “real” job, writing here, my almost 3500 square foot garden, and so many other chores and things that need done, it’s overwhelming. And that’s putting it mildly.

In order to make sure that our house stays as much under control as possible, I have a set order of operations that I do so that I can make sure my focus is on more important things than just cleaning all day.

Setting a Routine

Coming up with a routine that works for both my husband and I and the difference in our schedules (and honestly, our backgrounds) was not the simplest thing in the world.

Because we met and married later on in our lives, we had both been used to having and running our own homes. In very different ways.

So coming up with a compromise of what chores are important to him versus what is important to me was a learning curve.

Creating Daily Habits with a Daily Cleaning Checklist

I have heard different information on how long it actually takes to develop a new habit. Some say 21 days, others say 30 days. I don’t really know but I think that everyone develops in their own good time. Having a list in front of you helps tremendously tho, in my experience. Our Daily Cleaning Checklist hangs front and center on our refrigerator.

Having it hanging right their in front of our faces forces us to remember what we are supposed to be doing. Both of us do different things, so having the ability to mark it off once it’s done helps us stay better on track.

Check Only Once Done

This is a doozy. Make sure that anyone helping with this Daily Cleaning Checklist only checks off that they have done it AFTER they complete the task. So many times we intend to do something and it never gets finished.

Hold one another (or yourself) accountable to only checking things off once they are done. Good intentions never get much done. If they did, your home would be spotless, right?

Daily Cleaning Checklist

Most of what is on my Daily Cleaning Checklist is obvious. Generally, these are just the little things that most of us think about doing every day. Sometimes, however, things get away from us and we lose track of it all.

I keep this in front of me so that no matter how busy or tired we are, I remember to do certain things. Say I wake up in the morning and the dishwasher hasn’t been ran. It throws my entire day off whack! I need the routine of it all to make sure it all keeps running.

The daily chore list is like the oil in my truck. You don’t see it or think about it often, but without it, the engine just stops running. Without accountability and a routine, your household chores just stop getting done. Until it’s too late and you are overwhelmed.

Think of your Daily Chore List like your engine oil and I guarantee you see a change in your household.

(PS. This analogy also helps to explain it to your husband. They just love a good car reference.)
