Laundry Room Decorating with Free Printable
Decorating your laundry room should be both pretty and functional. Here is how I used my own personality without sacrificing function. Plus, I created my own laundry decor printable for you to download below.
Why Laundry Room Decorating?
Unlike in the past, most modern laundry rooms are not hidden away in some dark basement. My father’s is still downstairs, complete with the drain running into a sump pump hole.
It’s funny. I couldn’t begin to tell you how many times growing up we would go down to the basement to switch a load of laundry from the washer to the dryer and see a sock floating in the sump pump hole. We just grabbed it up and re-washed it.
But at least we ended up privy to where all the missing socks go! They really do a prison break when no one is looking.
Having a clean and pretty laundry room makes the chore just seem a little less daunting.

Somewhere you want to be; not just HAVE to be
I don’t know how many of you also fold laundry in your laundry room. I have an entire table set up that I use to fold everything on. If I have the space to fold as I pull out of the dryer, it gets done more often. Otherwise, I find myself throwing it into a basket and having the intent to fold it… but never seem to get to it.
And no one wants their family running around in wrinkled clothes looking all homeless.
My Top Three Laundry Room Decorating Tips
Storage is Essential
We all know that no matter what room you are in, having enough storage is a must. I knew I wanted to keep the cabinets intact when I was redoing our laundry room, but I also wanted more storage. Integrating pretty baskets and jars was a must. I have a lot of laundry related items that I need to have on hand in the laundry room. Having a pretty yet functional space for them all is a must.
Function Comes First
Maybe this is against most people’s views on decorating, but I cannot have a room all pretty but hard for me to get to the things that I use on a regular basis. My laundry soap, stain removers, bleach, and other laundry items MUST be easy to get to.
No one wants to have to get out a ladder or chair just to get to the darned detergent!
Items that are used regularly have to be stored in an easily accessible place, regardless of whether it’s “pretty” or not.
Make sure that even tho you are decorating to make it visually appealing, you don’t make your life difficult by “hiding” necessary items. In the long run, all you are going to do it end up having it sitting out anyhow. And items sitting out make the room feel cluttered. No one likes clutter.
Use ALL of your Space
Most laundry rooms are small, damp spaces. The sqare footage may not be huge, but look up!!
Install shelves and other decorative items up higher to draw your eye up and make the space feel bigger. If you do not have windows or doors, a few well-placed mirrors will not only help with lighting issues, but will make the space feel more open by reflecting visual space back into the room.
I’m lucky enough that my laundry room is not small, but I still took advantage of the high ceilings to create even more storage for less often used items. I love my glass pitchers, but I do not use them much. I typically only use them when I’m entertaining for homemade lemonade and/or sangria.
Because I had open shelf space, I used one up on the shelf to dress it up a bit. I may or may not add flowers to it, but as of right now, I like the minimalist look to just the empty pitcher there.
What I Still Want to Add
Even though the space is mostly complete, I still have a few projects in mind to complete the look.
Because the shelves are not very deep, I need to invest the time into making custom sized wood crates for them. I know that a few wood crates would add to the rustic look, and provide me even more storage for beach towels and other seasonal items that need a home. Heck, I may even make enough to hold all of the extra sheet sets and give me more room in our makeshift linen closet.
I have more wall space that needs a little more of something to break up the painted brick. I have some old windows that I am working on stripping and using Mirror paint on to reflect even more light into the room.
Always a Work in Progress…
Remember that you will never gets things perfect the first time around. You may love the look, but then realize it’s function isn’t what you were expecting. Don’t be afraid to change things up. Having the patience to know that eventually you will love it all will get you where you want it to be. As perfect as possible for your family.
